Centennial Convention a Success

October 16, 2007

A record number of attendees -- over 700 -- attended ALTA's Centennial Convention with close to 400 attending the stunningly-decorated closing banquet. ALTA's 100th anniversary convention concluded on Saturday with a special presentation, a speaker on dealing with different generations in the workforce, and an address by former Secretary of State Colin Powell.

The morning began with a special tribute to EVP James R. Maher, who retired October 15 after two decades with ALTA. Jim was honored with a standing ovation from the crowd. Jim was also presented with an Honorary Membership, ALTA's highest honor.

Neil Howe gave an insightful presentation on the characteristics of the different generational groups, from baby boomers to millenials, and how they can work together in the work place.

The highlight of the morning was a down-to-earth presentation by General Colin Powell. Powell talked to the packed room about the world after September 11, his initial support of the war in Iraq, and the causes he has been passionate about since leaving the Bush Administration.

Powell had a busy day starting with a breakfast with ALTA President Gary Kermott, his wife Debra and some First American employees, (First American sponsored General Powell) then visited the ALTA-sponsored Habitat for Humanity house after the session and met with some ALTA volunteers and the family who will move into the house. Several TV stations covered his visit.

We hope you can join us at next year's Annual Convention, October 15-18 at the Hyatt Regency Kauai Resort in Kauai, Hawaii. Plan for it now and we'll see you there.
