Virginia, North Carolina report year-over-year increases in September sales

Home sales in Virginia and North Carolina were up in September compared with year-ago figures for the same month, according to Realtor associations in the two states.

Sales of existing single-family homes in Virginia were up 28 percent in September to 9,289 homes compared with 7,254 during the same month a year ago, according to the Virginia Association of Realtors.

The median price was 3.7 percent to $144,480 compared with last year's $139,321.

Year-to-date sales were also up in the state, posting an approximate 7.7 percent increase over the first nine months of last year.

VAR President Carol Clarke cited record-low mortgage rates as the factor driving potential buyers to make a move.

The North Carolina Association of Realtors reported 6,472 homes sold statewide in September, a 9 percent increase compared with year-ago figures. The average sales price in September was $176,402.

Year-to-date sales were at 62,369 units on an unadjusted basis in September. This was 8 percent higher than the 57,773 units sold during the same period last year.
