Michigan Passes Remote Online Notarization Bill

June 19, 2018

On June 12, the Michigan legislature passed HB5811, which permits remote online notarization. The bill awaits the signature of Gov. Rick Snyder.

If signed, Michigan would join Tennessee, Minnesota, Vermont, Indiana, Virginia, Montana, Texas and Nevada with laws explicitly allowing the practice.

Remote online notarization involves the use of audio visual technology and electronic methods to conduct a notarization.

The Michigan bill follows the key principles of the MBA-ALTA model.
