EPodunk is one of the newer demographic data providers on the Web and aims to help home shoppers whittle down their list of potential locations by providing the details, features and environmental aspects of more than 25,000 communities throughout the country.

The site gathers information from thousands of sources, including government agencies, databases, print reference works and news organizations, and in turn provides the scoop on everything from air quality to water sources, according to the company.

The Web site also provides a standard "best places to live" list, crime statistics, school reports, weather data and geocoded information about parks, museums, historic sites, colleges, schools and other places of interest.

"Yearning for one place while living in another is a typically American state of mind. Every year, one out of every six Americans changes address; 8.5 million young adults leave home to enroll in college; and 66 million U.S. adults take a trip that includes a visit to a historic or cultural site," says the Web site's mission statement. "EPodunk goes beyond population numbers to the ineffable things that define the essence of a neighborhood – with literary excerpts, local events, notable personalities and history."

Epodunk is a privately held company is based in Ithaca, N.Y., and was founded last year by three journalists and a marketing executive.
