2007 Federal Conference Highlights

March 21, 2007

More than 160 title professionals gathered at the historic Willard Hotel in Washington, DC today to kick off ALTA's 2006 Federal Conference.

Attendees heard some good news. Warren Tyron, Deputy Staff Director for the House Financial Services Committee, told attendees that unless the GovernmentAccountability Office (GAO) report reveals some disasterous revelation, acting on the report does not fit with the current committee agenda. However, he cautioned he has not seen the report yet. He also indicated that a federal charter for insurance and RESPA reform would not be leading issues for the committee.

In other news from Hill committees: Kara Stein, Legislative Assistant for Senator Jack Reed, told attendees that the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs will put its focus on "housing." She indicated the committee will focus on: modernizing the Federal Housing Administration; simplifying the homebuying process; ending predatory lending; and establishing a world-class regulator for the GSEs.

Chuck Todd, editor-in-chief for The Hotline, Washington's premier daily briefing on American politics, was the TIPAC luncheon speaker. He provided his perspective on the 2008 presidential candidates and their prospects for the White House.

Tomorrow attendees will hear educational sessions in the morning and go to Capitol Hill for a lunch with members of Congress.
