Agents, Abstracters Can Learn the Latest on RESPA Compliance

January 13, 2011

With all of the regulatory changes over the past year, title agents and abstracters may be unsure of various regulatory pitfalls that could prove disastrous to their operations. Marx David Sterbcow , managing attorney with the New Orleans-based law firm The Sterbcow Law Group, will give a presentation on the future enforcement of RESPA, aimed at helping agents and abstracters compete compliantly in these complex regulatory times, during the Jan. 16 Agents and Abstracters Forum at the Doubletree Guest Suites in Nashville, Tenn.

The new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has said civil penalties will be imposed for violations of any of the consumer financial laws, including RESPA. While there are three tiers of fines that may be assessed for each day during which a violation occurs, a fine up to $1 million may be imposed for known violations. This is a fine a small operation simply can’t afford. Make sure you attend to get the latest on RESPA enforcement.

Wondering what’s legal and what’s not when soliciting business from referral sources? Curious how to respond to a HUD investigation? Attendees are urged to bring their questions and get their concerns addressed.

There will be a “pay for your own” group dinner on site at the hotel from 5:30-8 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 15. The meeting will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 16 with a continental breakfast. The meeting will start at 9 a.m. with a working lunch. The meeting will conclude at 4 p.m. Business casual attire is appropriate throughout this event. Registration is only $50. Click here to register. Besides Sterbcow’s presentation, the meeting will be held in a round-table format where attendees can offer input on a list of topics ranging from operations, human resources, technology, sales and marketing, to the hot topics of the day.

The Agents and Abstracters Forum provides an unparalleled opportunity for small, independent agents and abstracters to meet with your peers and freely exchange ideas, experience and opinions on issues that affect your business today. The agenda is developed by title agents, for title agents. The discussion flows freely since there are only agents in attendance.
