Inside Yankees legend Lou Gehrig's cheap, for-sale home (PHOTOS)

You could own Yankees legend Lou Gehrig's old home on the cheap.

The home Gehrig bought for his parents in 1928 -- four bedrooms, 2 1/2 bathrooms -- in New Rochelle is up for the listed price of $399,999. That's more than $100,000 less than market value, according to the New York Post.

The seller has put the home up for a short sale, hence the lower price, according to listing agent Julia Mazza of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Westchester Properties.

The home sits on a 1/4-acre lot and boasts 2,522 square feet. Here's an overview of the home from Realtor.com:

The average home price in New Rochelle is $862,000, the website said.

The Post report said Gehrig lived at the home for five years. Jonathan Eig, a Gehrig biographer, described the home in the report:

"It's not a grand, ostentatious house. It was a modest, efficient and humble place," much like the baseball legend himself, said Jonathan Eig, author the 2005 Gehrig biography "Luckiest Man."

"It was a good house for Lou." "He was very tight with money," said Eig, a former Wall Street Journal reporter. "He grew up very poor, and once he got this big contract with the Yankees, he saw it as an opportunity to take care of his parents."

"He was a very shy person, he was never a man about town, even when he was arguably one of the most handsome and eligible bachelors in New York. He didn't go out at night, he went home to help his mother set the table and wash the dishes after dinner."
