Manager of State Advocacy

The Role

The Manager of State Advocacy at ALTA is a rewarding position that allows one to work with the 6,000+ member companies of our trade association, track and monitor important state-based advocacy priorities as part of ALTA’s Government Affairs team and promote an effective partnership and relationship between ALTA and State Land Title Associations (SLTA’s).

As the primary staff contact for industry relations and ALTA’s state-based advocacy priorities, the Manager of State Advocacy will know how to leverage ALTA’s advocacy, communication, education, and networking capabilities to effectively distribute those tools to state members and associations. The Manager will assess state legislative and regulatory priorities and inventory those projects with a real-time tracking system. He or she must be able to learn state-by-state business practices and anticipate state legislative and regulatory public policy trends in order to spot potential areas of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats for the industry.

The Manager will also regularly organize conference calls, webinars, and other informational tools to assist ALTA members and SLTA’s with their specific priorities. He or she will also play a critical role as the interim head of SLTA’s that do not have permanent Executive Directors. The Manager will act as a liaison with other relevant real estate based trade associations regarding state matters. Of course, other duties will be assigned as necessary.

Founded in 1907, ALTA is a national trade association and voice of the real estate settlement services, abstract and title insurance industry. ALTA represents more than 6,000 member companies. With more than 13,000 offices throughout the country, ALTA members operate in every county in the United States to search, review and insure land titles to protect home buyers and mortgage lenders who invest in real estate. ALTA members include title insurance companies, title agents, independent abstracters, title searchers and attorneys, ranging from small, one-county operations to large national title insurers.

ALTA is headquartered in Washington, DC’s Golden Triangle district, blocks away from the Dupont Circle, Farragut North, and Farragut West Metro stations.

Candidate Profile

A Bachelor’s degree (preferably in a relevant public policy field) and a minimum of three years experience in a corresponding advocacy field are required for this position. You must possess an understanding of political and public policy sensitivities while interacting with high-level stakeholders, such as elected officials, regulators, and executive-level ALTA members. You must be able to work well in a fast-paced team environment as an integral part of ALTA’s Government Affairs Advocacy Team. Strong writing and communications skills, and a comprehensive knowledge of all Microsoft Office applications, will be critical to your success in this position.

Salary will be commensurate with your experience, and business travel of approximately 10-25% of the time. This position will be based in the Washington, D.C. office.
