2026 First Quarter Title Insurance Industry Market Share Executive Summary

Title Insurance Industry Market Share and Financial Statement compilations for the 1st Quarter of 2026 are now available on the ALTA website.

The first quarter of 2026 was another positive quarter for the title insurance industry. Title Insurance Premiums Written were up 16.2% from the first quarter of 2025. Total Operating Income was up 30.4%. Operating Expenses were up 29.4% and Loss and Loss Adjustment Expenses were up 10.0%, resulting in Net Operating Gain of $181.8 Million. Adding in Net Investment Gain of $117.9 Million resulted in Net Income of $241.7 Million. This compared to $188.9 Million for the 1st Quarter of 2025, an increase of 27.9% and is the 5th highest 1st Quarter Net Income in the industry’s history.

With $241.7 Million of Net Income, the industry continued its strong financial position.  Total Assets were $11.7 Billion, including $10.5 Billion in Cash and Invested Assets.  Statutory Surplus was almost $5.3 Billion and Statutory Reserves were strong at $5.7 Billion.

After 7 consecutive quarters in which Title Premiums Written decreased from the prior years equivalent quarter, the 1st Quarter of 2024 essentially ended this string, showing a decrease of only 0.6%, and the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Quarters of 2024, four Quarters of 2025 and the 1st Quarter of 2026 recorded increases of 4.2%, 5.5%, 20.2%, 15.6%, 11.2%, 14.2%, 14.5% and 16.2%, respectively.

On a state-by-state basis, 49 states showed 1st Quarter 2026 written premiums increasing from 1st Quarter 2025. Three states were up over 50%, two states were up between 40% and 50%, three states were up between 30% and 40%. Fourteen states were up between 20% and 30%, 15 states were up between 10% and 20% and 12 states were up less than 10%. Only one state, plus the District of Columbia, were down less than 10%.

All ten of the largest states recorded increases. The largest state - Texas was up 8.0%, Florida, the #2 state, was up 10.1%, California, the #3 state, was up 15.3%, New York, the #4 state, was up 18.7% and Pennsylvania, the #5 state, was up 46.4%.
