IRS Still Accepting Paper Checks; Will Stop Issuing them After Sept 30

September 18, 2025

The U.S. Department of the Treasury announced that the federal government will stop issuing paper checks for most federal payments beginning Sept. 30. For now, the IRS will still accept check payments for taxes after Sept 30, which is necessary for many tax returns like trusts. This change does not impact title agents and closing attorneys who handle closings in the United States involving foreign sellers and facilitating payments for Foreign Investment in Real Property Tax Act transactions.
