January 22, 2001

The Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs today approved the nomination of Mel Martinez as Secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development. The nomination was approved in a voice vote with no dissents. A vote on the nomination by the full Senate will be scheduled by Senate leaders.

"I am very encouraged by Mr. Martinez and his approach to HUD," Gramm said. "I think his background will be very helpful for him in running this agency."

Martinez was elected in 1998 as the chairman of Orange County, Florida. Martinez has served as chairman of Florida Gov. Jeb Bush's Growth Management Study Commission, chairman of the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority, chairman of the Orlando Housing Authority, and as board member of the Orlando/Orange County Expressway Authority.
