Frank Abagnale to keynote annual land title convention in Phoenix

Inman News Features

Frank Abagnale, the real person portrayed in Steven Spielberg'slatest film, "Catch Me If You Can," with Leonardo DiCaprio, will keynote the American Land Title Association's convention this year.

ALTA will host its annual convention Oct. 22-25 at the Arizona Biltmore Resort & Spa in Phoenix.

Abagnale, one of the world's most famous reformed confidence men, will talk about his experiences and how to prevent fraud.

As a teenager, Abagnale cased $2.5 million in fraudulent checks in every state and 26 foreign countries over a five-year period. He was apprehended by French police at the age of 21 and served time in French, Swedish and U.S. prison systems. After five years, he was released on the condition that he would help the government, without remuneration, by teaching and assisting federal law enforcement agencies.

Since that time, Abagnale has become one of the world's most respected authorities on the subjects of forgery, embezzlement and secure documents, and has lectured and consulted hundreds of financial institutions, corporations and government agencies.

Also slated to speak is Kenneth Harney, a nationally syndicated columnist on real estate for the Washington Post. Harney is also managing director of the National Real Estate Development Center, a professional education and publishing organization, and has authored two books on mortgage finance and real estate.

The conference will also feature general and educational sessions as well as various committee meetings.

Washington, D.C.-based ALTA is a national trade association for the title insurance industry, whose members search, review and insure land titles to protect home buyers and mortgage lenders investing in real estate.
