Wells Fargo to Shutter 122 Offices in California, Rebrand Wachovia Branches

December 3, 2009

Wells Fargo & Co said Tuesday that it would fold up 122 California branches due to its takeover of Wachovia Corp last year. The lender also said it will rebrand 65 Wachovia branches in California as Wells Fargo offices in April.

The move will create the state’s largest retail banking network, bringing the total number of Wells Fargo branches in California to more than 1,000 and the number of ATMs to over 3,200. Wells will combine 101 Wachovia branches and 21 Wells Fargo locations into nearby branches.

California is one of six states where both Wells Fargo and Wachovia had branches. The other states are Colorado, Arizona, Illinois, Nevada and Texas. The Wachovia locations in Colorado were converted to Wells Fargo offices last month. Wachovia branches in Arizona, Nevada and Illinois are scheduled to be converted in March. Conversion in Texas is expected to take place later next year.
