Law Firm Taps Former Regulatory Counsel to Fidelity National Title Group

August 19, 2014

Carlton Fields Jorden Burt announced the addition of Robert Schmidlin, former in-house vice president and regulatory counsel to Fidelity National Title Group Inc.

Schmidlin is a member of the firm’s Real Property Litigation practice group. His practice focuses on title insurance regulatory matters, including market conduct and financial examinations, preparing and securing regulatory approval of filings, licensing applications, mergers and redomestications of insurance companies, negotiation of service provider agreements, handling inquiries by government agencies, and advising on regulatory aspects of business transactions.

“Rob knows first-hand the complicated legal and regulatory issues that clients face daily,” said Marty J. Solomon, co-chair of the firm’s Real Property Litigation practice. “As former in-house regulatory counsel to one of the nation’s market leaders in the title insurance industry, his experience is invaluable to the understanding of clients’ risks, operations, and regulatory concerns.”

As the title insurance industry continues to see numerous regulatory developments—from the federalization of lender-service provider relationships to active market conduct and financial examinations going on throughout the United States—Schmidlin’s experience will bolster the firm’s title insurance and real property capabilities.

Schmidlin, of counsel, will work in the firm’s New York and Orlando offices. During his time with Fidelity, Schmidlin provided legal and regulatory compliance support for title insurers, an international title insurance division, title service affiliates and the company's property and casualty insurance group. He worked closely with the company’s legal and compliance leadership and executive management on regulatory matters affecting title insurance and related business transactions.

Prior to his role in-house, Schmidlin was an attorney at Stroock & Stroock & Lavan LLP in New York. His practice focused on insurance regulatory compliance advising clients on accident and health, life, mortgage guaranty, property and casualty, reinsurance, and workers’ compensation matters. He handled client matters before state regulatory agencies, including the New York State Insurance Department.

Schmidlin also served as legislative counsel to the New York State Insurance Department and as assistant federal relations coordinator to the New York State Department of Health. He is admitted to practice law in New York State. He holds a J.D. from Western New England College School of Law and a B.A., cum laude, from the University at Albany. He was previously a member of the American Land Title Association’s Government Affairs Committee, the Government Affairs Committee of the Florida Land Title Association and the Committee on Professional Ethics and the Task Force on Ethics Reform of the New York County Lawyers’ Association.
