ALTA responds to New York Times Article "Saving on Title Insurance"

March 18, 2013 - Your March 17 piece, “Saving on Title Insurance,” was informative and I want to take this opportunity to clarify a few things about the land title industry. To see the full original New York Times article, go to: http://nyti.ms/1gR66eb

Title agents retain the majority of the premium because they bear the costs of the title search, examination, curative efforts, and policy issuance. The American Land Title Association (ALTA), continues to develop tools to help consumers understand the closing process, the value of title insurance, where their dollar goes for their policy, and how to shop for title insurance.

Rates for title insurance in New York vary within the state. But like any service, price should not be the only factor when selecting a company. ALTA, along with the New York State Land Title Association, educates consumers about title insurance so they can better understand their choices and make informed decisions. All homeowners should visit www.homeclosing101.org for comprehensive information about local title services.
