ALTA Updates Title Insurance Regulatory Surveys

July 9, 2013

ALTA is pleased to announce several changes to the Title Insurance Regulatory Surveys (TIRS), the most comprehensive collection of regulatory information and practices of the title insurance industry. Originally developed by industry regulatory counsels, TIRS has become a testament to the dedication of title professionals who ensure the reliability of information contained within the publications.

TIRS is organized into seven sections focusing on state laws relating to the title insurance industry:

  • Introduction
  • Title insurers
  • Title agents
  • Abstracters
  • Escrow/Closing personnel
  • Market practices
  • Real estate practices
In January, ALTA began an effort to ensure surveys contain information from the most recent state legislative sessions.

The surveys can be purchased and downloaded online. Different pricing options exist for members and non-members. Originally, TIRS publications were only available for purchase as a complete set for all 50 states and the District of Columbia, or by volumes, containing groupings of states by regions. Now, a company or individual may purchase the survey for the state in which their business is located.

Also receiving a facelift is the TIRS summary chart, which is now available in an Excel format allowing the information to be easily sorted. This format is helpful in examining legal and organizational questions for multiple jurisdictions. In an effort to execute efficiency for all TIRS categories, the summary chart will be updated continuously with each state survey update.

The District of Columbia’s TIRS report is available for download to provide a sample of the information that can be accessed with the purchase of a subscription. A detailed description of the information within the Title Insurance Regulatory Survey summary chart also is available online.
