NAIC Establishes American Indian Liaison Committee

The Executive Committee of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) has approved the formation of an American Indian Liaison Committee. The committee will address insurance issues involving the cooperation and relationship between sovereign states and sovereign tribal nations.
"The committee will provide a forum for discussion of insurance issues unique to the American Indian community," said Jim Donelon, NAIC president and Louisiana insurance commissioner. "This decision reflects our commitment to fostering an inclusive and equitable marketplace for the benefit of all insurance consumers."
"The federal government has formally recognized more than 560 tribes residing in 34 states throughout the U.S.," said John D. Doak, who serves as Oklahoma Insurance Commissioner and introduced the proposal. "This fact underscores the need for dialogue in addressing state and tribal cooperation in the insurance industry."
ALTA has a Native American Lands Committee that monitors legislation, regulation, case law and ongoing litigation to determine general impact on title insurance and conveyancing.
