New Study Released - "Online Banking Privacy: A Slow Confusing Start to Giving Customers Control Over Their Information."

September 10, 2001

On August 29. 2001, the Center for Democracy and Technology issued a  report entitled "Online Banking Privacy: A Slow Confusing Start to Giving Customers Control Over Their Information." The Report criticizes online lenders, showing that of 100 banks offering customers the ability to open accounts and use other banking services online (such as bill payment, mortgage quotes), only 22% provide their customers convenient online means of preventing information sharing with other companies. According to the study, several mortgage companies (brokers) that offer online services are not giving any notices regarding privacy practices to their customers.
