Planning Your Congressional Visits
If you are looking to maximize your Federal Conference experience, then register to take part in ALTA’s 2011 Lobby Day on March 16, 2011. Here, you will get the opportunity to meet with your state's Congressional delegation on Capitol Hill. This is your opportunity to make your Congressman, Senators and their staff aware of the issues of importance to their constituents in the title industry. As their constituent, you are the best person to share your concerns directly with them.
ALTA will schedule meetings with your U.S. Senator's and Congressman's offices on Wednesday, March 16, 2011. If you do not want ALTA to set up your meetings for you please e-mail Kelley Williams at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Who Should I Expect to Meet?
The ALTA Government Affairs team is making every effort to schedule the meetings directly with your Representative and Senators, but due to the demanding nature of their daily responsibilities on the Hill it is likely that they will have a member of their staff speak with you. If you are meeting with a member of a Congressman’s staff, please keep in mind that these staffers will be knowledgeable on land title issues and other issues of interest to the land title industry. The Congressional staff handles such issues as financial services, banking, insurance and real estate industries. These staff members are the key advisors to your Members of Congress who have their ear when it comes time to discuss policy. These staff members are critical to Congress' role on policy issues important to our industry and your business. Lastly, it is important to note that in many cases, you will indeed have the opportunity to meet one-on-one with your Representative or Senator.
What Should I Say in My Meeting?
The ALTA Government Affairs team will make sure that you are aptly prepared for your meetings. In the weeks leading up to Lobby Day, we will be providing you with various informational guides and materials on the basics of lobbying, and everything you need to know to ensure you have a successful meeting. In addition, we will provide you with outlines of the issues that ALTA is hoping to have you address with your Congressman. Our first such informational guide can be found here.
What Should I Bring to My Meeting?
During Federal Conference, on Tuesday, March 15th, ALTA will provide to you briefings on the key priorities of Congress in 2011. ALTA will also present a Capitol Hill Lobby Day Preparation on Wednesday morning to provide you with useful tips for your day on "the Hill" and important messages and materials for you to share with your Congressional delegation and their staff. You may also wish to bring information about your company or your state Land Title Association as a "leave behind" at the end of your meeting.
