NIST, Cybersecurity Commission seek broad range of public cyber comments

The National Institute of Standards and Technology is seeking public comment on a broad range of cybersecurity issues. 

NIST issued a request for information in Wednesday’s Federal Register for public opinion to help guide its advisory role in the White House’s Commission on Enhancing National Cybersecurity. 

{mosads}“Steps must be taken to enhance existing efforts to increase the protection and resilience of the digital ecosystem, while maintaining a cyber environment that encourages efficiency, innovation, and economic prosperity,” reads the notice. 

The, a 12-member, presidentially appointed commission was created by presidential order in February. It is housed within the Department of Commerce.  

The commission aims “to strengthen cybersecurity in both the public and private sectors while protecting privacy, ensur[e] public safety and economic and national security, [foster] discovery and development of new technical solutions, and [bolster] partnerships between Federal, State, and local government and the private sector in the development, promotion, and use of cybersecurity technologies, policies, and best practices” over the next decade. 

NIST is asking for comments on issues of cybersecurity in critical infrastructure, governance, markets, the internet of things and state and local governments as well as cybersecurity insurance, bolstering the security workforce, protecting identity and access and educating the public. 

In these areas, it is specifically asking for projections on policies, economic incentives, emerging technologies, useful metrics and other current and potential solutions throughout the next decade.

Comments will be due by 5 p.m. on Sept. 9.
