U.S. President Barack Obama targeted the gap between the well-off and the wanting as he sought to reach beyond his time in office to shape the next election campaign and potentially the agenda of his successor.

“We have risen from recession freer to write our own future than any other nation on Earth,” Obama said Tuesday in his sixth annual State of the Union address. “It’s now up to us to choose who we want to be over the next 15 years, and for decades to come.”
